A vast hydro meteorological network with wireless facilities exists over the Damodar catchment area. Recently, 39 automatic rain gauges have been installed at various locations in the upper valley. Real time data of river gauge, rainfall, river discharge from different stations are measured and transmitted through existing communication network to central flood control station at Maithon. Forty eight hour rainfall forecast and seventy two hour rainfall outlook for entire Damodar valley region is provided by Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Kolkata and is updated every 12 hour. Flood Forecasting Unit (FFU) at Maithon predicts the inflow into the reservoirs based on the real time data & the rainfall forecast of IMD.

Before releasing water from dam spillway gates, necessary warning is communicated to district authorities, downstream industries along the banks, municipalities and others including senior administrative officials of Burdwan, Bankura and Purulia, I& W Dept., Govt. of W.B., EE, DHW, Durgapur and Member (RM), CWC, New Delhi.
Whenever combined discharge from Maithon & Panchet dams exceeds 1132 cumec, special messages are broadcast through Doordarshan and AIR regional news bulletins.
